For those of you who would rather carry around a compact, efficient, practical piece of monetary confinement apparatus around with you all day instead of the bulky, bouncing around, heavy sack of gold, silver, gems, and other treasures used in a functioning economy, then this is the place for you! A wallet! instead of some sort of currency pouch for your goodies. Oh well. Some people just don't appreciate the hassle, confusion, and lack of versatility that ancient means of payment can provide.
